October 10th marks World Mental Health Day, a moment to reflect on how we support wellbeing in an industry where emotional health is often overlooked.
We’ve trained a team of Mental Health First Aiders who volunteer their time to support colleagues, offering a listening ear and signposting to professional help. We also partner with organisations like Andy’s Man Club, whose message “It’s okay to talk” is proudly displayed on our Grove Street sites.
We sat down with Rachel Moss, M&Y Mental Health First Aider and Health & Safety Officer and asked her for her thoughts:
“Mental health support is at the core of our teams, it’s not a ‘taboo’ subject!”
“From your very first day, all staff receive a mental health induction, ensuring everyone is aware of the support available and how to access it easily.”
“Over the past few years, we’ve seen much more engagement from staff. I truly believe that’s thanks to our fantastic Mental Health First Aid team, managers, and directors who help cascade information and remind staff of the support available.”
“We’ve all been or will be affected by mental health in our lives, whether personally or through a loved one. I believe that showing empathy encourages people to seek help and ultimately feel better.”
“If you feel you could support colleagues or be a listening ear in their time of need, I highly recommend becoming a Mental Health First Aider!”
To make support even more accessible, every M&Y work device comes pre-installed with the Hub of Hope app. It’s a free, nationwide directory of mental health services. Whether on site or on the move, help is just a tap away.
Mental health support isn’t a one-day conversation, it’s something we build into our culture, every day.
