Managing Director, Gill Kelly reflects on our exciting start to the financial year…

As we journey through 2023, it’s evident that this year is shaping up to be a truly exciting one for M&Y Maintenance and Construction. With several diverse construction schemes already underway and the potential for more to commence in the coming months, our team is buzzing with energy and enthusiasm.

We’re particularly thrilled to see our client base expanding, and it warms our hearts to note that most of our clients have evolved into long-term partners. This transition from project-based relationships to enduring partnerships is a testament to our commitment to delivering excellence consistently.

At M&Y, we’ve always aspired to cultivate a core group of long-term collaborators. This approach allows us to gain a deep understanding of our client’s needs and continue providing top-tier service as a trusted and reliable friend.

In addition to strengthening our client relationships, we’ve been hard at work crafting our Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Strategy. This past year has seen us successfully execute our plan, delivering tangible benefits across the realms of People, Planet, and Procurement.

What sets our ESG strategy apart is that it’s driven not just by our leadership team but by every member of the M&Y family. Our colleagues have played an active role in setting targets that resonate with them personally. For example, our goal to procure 50% electric vehicles in 2023/24 stems from our collective commitment to sustainability.

At M&Y, our values and strategies aren’t mere words on paper or slogans on a board. They permeate every facet of our business, shaping our decisions and actions. When we truly understand and embody our values, making the right choices becomes second nature.

In recent months, we’ve also experienced growth through recruitment, a noteworthy achievement during a period marked by skill shortages. We extend a warm welcome to our new colleagues, who bring fresh perspectives and skills to our team. At M&Y, we embrace new ideas and ways of working, eagerly anticipating the inspiration and challenges our new recruits will bring.

Winston Churchill once said, “To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.” This quote resonates deeply with us as we embrace change and continuous improvement.

However, it’s important to acknowledge the challenges that our industry faces. Construction has witnessed more insolvencies in the past year than any other sector, with one in five insolvencies attributed to construction businesses. This statistic is disheartening, considering our long-standing connection to the construction sector.

M&Y has been actively supporting both existing and new partners by taking over partly finished projects and collaborating with the existing supply chain to ensure seamless project completion. Our primary focus is not solely profit; rather, it’s centered on delivering customer-centric services, doing what’s right, and treating customers the way we’d like to be treated.

As part of our commitment to purpose-driven profit, we provide safe and fulfilling careers for local talent and foster enduring partnerships. When our clients face challenges due to contractor administrations, we step in to make the process as seamless as possible, ultimately delivering much-needed, high-quality homes.

In March 2023, Ecogee, our sister company, joined The Regenda Group. This partnership complements M&Y’s services by providing proven solutions for securing funding and delivering energy improvements across the Northwest. Together with M&Y’s expertise in maintenance, planned projects, mechanical and electrical work, facilities management, and construction delivery, it’s a match made in heaven.
