Women building careers in construction – Emma & Lily’s story

Women in Construction - Emma & Lily

Women in Construction Week provides the perfect opportunity for us to celebrate some of the women already working in the sector, like Emma and Lily.

Before starting her career at M&Y, our multi skilled joiner, Emma worked in pubs and was training to manage a pub. She’d always wanted to learn a trade and after seeing an apprenticeship come up at M&Y, she decided to give it a try. 8 years on, she’s now completed her apprenticeship, is a qualified multi skilled joiner AND is training a brand-new apprentice Lily

“A big thing about this job and being in construction generally means that you can’t be afraid to ask for help. Being a woman in the industry it can sometimes feel a bit harder. Being in a strong team really helped me with that, we all need help from time to time and we’re all here to help each other.”
Emma, Multi-Skilled Joiner

“My apprenticeship means I’m doing all sorts, hanging doors, caulking – loads of different things each day; I love it. I knew before I joined M&Y that I wanted to do joinery– and now I know for certain.”

“I feel totally myself doing this job. Sometimes people think women in this role won’t be as good or not as strong, working with Emma and the team has proved to me what I already knew – we’re just as good!”
Lily, Apprentice Multi-Skilled Joiner

At M&Y we don’t want to be exclusive, we want to be inclusive. The construction industry is a great place to be right now, and there are so many opportunities to carve a successful career. Gender should never be a barrier to a job.
