No two days are alike as a Degree Apprentice Quantity Surveyor: Ollie’s Story

degree apprentice quantity surveyor

Meet Oliver, a dedicated and ambitious new apprentice at M&Y who has found his passion in the construction industry. After completing the BTEC Level 3 Construction in the Built Environment course at Reaseheath College, he discovered an exciting opportunity at M&Y for a Quantity Surveyor Degree Apprenticeship.

“Since joining M&Y, I have been learning all aspects of the role, from managing project finances to procuring sub-contractors, negotiating on prices and labour. I knew I wanted to do quantity surveying because it offers so much diversity; no two days are alike!”

“It’s been constant learning from the team. The apprenticeship means sometimes I’ll be given tasks that are a challenge, because everything is new to me. I’ve been able to overcome them and learn skills for life with the help of the people I’ve been working with. It’s helped me build my confidence a lot.”

“One of the biggest challenges for me has been understanding the industry terminology. At first, I was overwhelmed by the number of unfamiliar words, terms, and abbreviations. The support and understanding from the team makes this easy. I can always ask questions, they’ve never made me feel like I have to know all these things right away.”

“The support from the team has been amazing. Gary who is my manager really helps me all the time, especially at the start. All the communication before I started really eased my nerves and any uncertainties that can sometimes happen when starting a new job.”

“M&Y is a really welcoming work environment, I felt at home right away. Doing my apprenticeship here has surpassed my expectations, and I look forward to the ongoing learning opportunities that are ahead of me here”

“Looking back on my first few weeks I can see that from my first day to now a big difference. My confidence has really increased, and I know that I have made a lot of progress and feel like I’m already so much more prepared for my university course. I’m excited to keep on progressing!”
