Shannon has been with us at M&Y since June 2023 and works as a Repairs Supervisor. Shannon is responsible for making sure our operatives complete all repairs and improvement works safely, efficiently and to client satisfaction.
We spoke to Shannon to find out how she got into the industry, and what it’s like being a woman working in construction.
Where did you work before and how did you get into M&Y?
Before working in the construction field, I worked as a project manager for an AV installation company organising and planning work for operatives.
I initially joined M&Y doing construction administration, I had recently become a mum and needed to be closer to nursery in case of emergency. It was the best decision I have ever made for my career.
When the Repairs supervisor role came up, I felt like I owed it to myself to apply. I always want to push myself to do better.
As a women working in construction, what makes you feel empowered in your job?
The responsibly I have in being able to help and support countless families makes me feel empowered and knowing I play a role in improving their living conditions. I enjoy supporting them with all their needs along the way.
What skills have you developed working as Repairs Supervisor?
Every day is a school day in this job, every day I learn something more technical, something more related to a trade that I didn’t know about before. I’m currently being trained by a Regenda Homes Surveyor so I can survey properties. I have learned a lot with M&Y, and I couldn’t be more thankful.
How do you think we can encourage more women to join the Construction industry?
To women and girls thinking about a career in Construction I’d say; give it a go! It was the best decision I have ever made for my career.
Is there someone at M&Y who inspires you in your career?
Every woman who works here! I know its cliche to say but it’s no longer a man’s industry and women are making it our own: Gill, Maria, Abbie, Janine – just to name a few, they all inspire me! They all work so hard and have built a solid career in this industry.
This is the first construction company I have worked for. Seeing these women is a big inspiration.
