Social Value and what it means to M&Y

Abbie Riley Social Value

Last week we invited our supply chain together to discuss what is working well and the ways we could improve how we work. We spoke about Social Value, live project updates, health and safety and inviting feedback from our subcontractors about what it is like to work with M&Y.

Social value is becoming a crucial part in construction firms winning contracts. A growing reason for this is that buildings and the communities they create need to and should improve people’s lives.

Abbie Riley our Social Value Manager spoke Social Value and what it means to M&Y. Sharing the importance of providing long-term positive impacts in the communities we work in.

“Social value isn’t just a tick box exercise; we genuinely care and deliver exact what we say we will while listening to what the local community want and need”

Having a clear Environmental, Social and Governance strategy demonstrates our intention and commitment to social value in our business decisions. This includes the way we employ staff, engage with communities and carry out all our procurement along the way.

There are many ways our valued sub-contractors support Social Value alongside us during our build projects throughout the year. M&Y are working with kitchen supplier Paula Rosa Furniture and joinery contractor MJS to fit a new kitchen in the parent accommodation at Liverpool Women’s Hospital

M&Y held a football tournament earlier this year with our supply chain that helped to raise over £2000 that was donated to local charities as part of our extra care development with Wigan Council. New Look Windows fitted windows to the Sunflower centre next door to our Aigburth road development, totalling £2500 in donation.

The event also welcomed our Commercial Director, Ian Phillips who shared updates from our 258 live sites, keeping everyone posted about our current and future projects. Our Health and Safety Director Dave Morrell who filled everyone in on H&S considerations when working on live sites & we also had a great collaborative planning session from Andy Spooner from AS solutions!

Feedback from the session attendees was fantastic and helps us continue to look to the future. Together, we have a shared commitment to leave a lasting legacy in the communities we work in:

“The event we attended was great, it was a fantastic opportunity to meet other subcontractors and a good opportunity to see the social value impact of being a subcontractor of M&Y”

“It was great to join in the event and be able to give feedback to M&Y. They are a good company to work for and we highly value being part of the M&Y supply chain.”
